Text: Teahupoo might not have been at it fearsome best today but the surfing action was all class as the worlds top 45 surfers completed round one of the Billabong Pro Tahiti.

Current world champ Kelly Slater (Florida, USA) came out firing in the barreling 1.5 metre (3-5ft) waves on offer for the third men’s world tour event of the year.

The eight time world champion carving his way through his opening heat with rides of 9.50 and 8.60 to make his intention of claiming a fourth Teahupoo crown crystal clear.

Also winning through were top seeds Andy Irons, Mick Fanning and Bobby Martinez. Taj Burrow was relegated to the second round after an upset win by tour rookie Jeremy Florez
