SURFRIDER DISEMBARKS AT COPENHAGEN SUMMIT!

Pubblicato in data: 12 Dec 2009

La seguente news ci è stata inviata in quanto partners di Surfrider foundation, la posto in inglese in quanto ancora non hanno un sistema di news internazionali:

With Copenhagen Summit, time has come for highly important international negotiations on climate
change. From 7th to 18th of December, the 15th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) gathers
world leaders to define measures to be taken to limit global warming. Surfrider Foundation Europe goes to
Copenhagen to represent nautical sports practitioners’ interests and will attend heads of states’ and
their delegations’ meetings.
Climate change : oceans and coastlines at stake
As a non-profit organization devoted to the protection of the oceans, waves and coastlines, Surfrider
Foundation is very concerned about the climate change’s consequences for oceans and coastlines. Global
warming will affect all coastlines’ inhabitants, sea lovers, as well as activities practiced there in summer or all
year long.
Ocean acidification, a direct consequence of greenhouse gas emissions, is threatening marine
species. Sea level rise is also directly related to global warming (through two processes: water thermal
expansion and glacier retreat and disappearance) and will increase coastal retreat, which means a major
problem for coastal populations. Lastly, climate change is affecting specific areas like the Arctic region.
Indeed, temperatures have been rising there twice more than the global average.
Specific claims on maritime transport
In Copenhagen, Surfrider Foundation is supporting the objective claimed by a majority of NGOs of a
50% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, against the 2005 emissions. We are also associated with
European NGOs and French NGOs platforms (respectively Seas at Risk and France Nature Environnement) in
order to bring common demands. Besides, we will bring our specific expectations:
• Decrease greenhouse gas emissions coming from ships by integrating maritime transport activities in
Emission Trading System (ETS)
• Reach an Agreement for reinforced responsibility for the Arctic region.
• Implement the White Paper for adaptation on climate change
Sign the petition launched by UNEP to encourage governments to seal a fair,
balanced and efficient deal for climate during the December 2009’s meeting.
