Surfrider Foundation Europe launches a European petition to demand the adoption of a moratorium on all new European offshore oil rig activities
Tomorrow, on September 28, the European Parliament in Brussels will state its position on the adoption of an offshore oil rig moratorium for European waters.
Subsequent to the Deepwater Horizon oil-drilling rig accident in the Gulf of Mexico, Surfrider Foundation Europe is concerned that a similar event may unfold in Europe.
As long as safety standards and the polluter pays principle are not actively enforced in the offshore oil-drilling business, Surfrider is demanding a moratorium on all new offshore oil-drilling activities in Europe.
A number of measures are urgently required for existing oil-drilling rigs, namely comprehensive regulations that would eliminate waste and chemical disposal from offshore oil-drilling rigs, impose stringent safety measures capable of preventing oil spill risks and limiting of greenhouse gas emissions by these installations.
For these reasons, we state unequivocally that renewable sources of energy must be systematically prioritized over fossil fuels.
