JOHN JOHN FLORENCE WINS THE OI RIO PRO 2016
And beats returning Nixon teammate Jack Freestone.
Hossegor, FR - May 20, 2016 - The finale of the Oi Rio Pro, stop number 4 of 11 on the Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, was an all Nixon affair as John John Florence (HAW) and Jack Freestone (AUS) battled it out in front of thousands of spectators at Postinho, Rio de Janeiro.
In the end, experience told as 23-year-old Florence edged out WSL Championship Tour rookie Freestone in powerful 4 to 6 foot waves - the kind of conditions the young Hawaiian surfer feels right at home in.
Emerging from the water after a dominant display which put his Nixon teammate in an impossible combination situation, Florence said: "To win again in Brazil feels so good - this puts me right back in the mix, now sitting in third overall. There's still a long way to go so I'll just stick to my game plan of taking it one heat at a time. Big shout out to Jack for his incredible run to the final."
Freestone, competing in only his first event since returning from an injury sustained at the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, blew his way through earlier rounds in Rio de Janeiro, eliminating highly fancied local hero Gabriel Medina (BRA) in his semifinal heat. "I flew into Brazil not expecting too much, so to score the best result of my career after sitting out the last couple of months makes me super-happy," said 24-year-old Freestone. "Hats off to JJ for his win - I can vouch for the fact he's going to be tougher that ever to beat this year."
Chad DiNenna, Nixon Co-Founder, saying: "To see two of our surfers doing so well on the biggest stage has put a big smile on everyone's faces back at Nixon HQ - we're pumped to see Jack bounce back from injury like it was nothing, and to see John nail down his third elite tour victory - here's to many more."
